FAQ

Questions, answered straight

The things people ask first. Something missing? Ask in Discussions, or write to [email protected].

Is it production ready?

No. TachyonCMS is pre-alpha. The content API, sign-in and access rules work today. The admin screen, rich text, drafts and media don't exist yet, so keep it off public networks for now, and expect the occasional breaking change between 0.x releases.

What's the license?

MIT. Use it, change it and ship it, commercially or not. It stays open source, and GOVERNANCE.md says so in writing.

Do I have to sign a CLA to contribute?

No, and you never will. Nobody asks you to assign copyright either: you keep it. What you do instead is sign off each commit under the Developer Certificate of Origin, which is one flag: git commit -s. Because copyright stays spread across everyone who contributed, no single person or company can take the project closed.

How do I report a security issue?

Privately, please, never in a public issue. Use GitHub's private vulnerability reporting, or email [email protected] if you can't use GitHub. You'll get an acknowledgement within 3 working days. Fixes land on main and ship in the next 0.x release; older 0.x releases don't get backports. SECURITY.md has the details, and the security page covers how releases are signed.

Where's the admin?

It isn't built yet. Today you work with TachyonCMS through its HTTP API and the tachyon command line. The admin comes after rich text and blocks, drafts and scheduling, media, live preview and authoring tools, and the bar for it is that anyone who has used WordPress can pick it up without training. The roadmap has the order, and the editors page will email you when it's ready.

What does it run on?

One binary and one Postgres database. Releases come as binaries for Linux (x86_64, arm64, static) and macOS (Intel, Apple silicon), and as a Docker image at ghcr.io/tachyon-cms/tachyoncms. Postgres is the only database it supports.

Is there GraphQL?

Not yet. The API is REST and JSON. GraphQL is one of the options in the poll on what comes next, so if you need it, vote.

How fast is it?

There are no numbers on this site, on purpose. It's Rust, and published content is read from a single row, which is why it should be quick. That's an argument from how it's built, not a number. I'll publish reproducible benchmarks against the popular CMSs, method and all, before I quote one.

Is there a hosted version?

No. You run it yourself, wherever a binary or a container can run next to Postgres.

Who's behind it?

Me, James Conway (@jamesconwaydev). I started TachyonCMS, and while the project is small I make the final call, in public. The community page has how that opens up as more people join.
